VCU - Riverside Family Medicine Residency

  How To Apply: 

.

  • We accept applications only through ERAS

  • Twelve (12) PGY-1 positions are available - 8 positions are through the NRMP Match (allopathic) Program # 173920 and 4 positions are through the AOA Match (osteopathic) Program # 173194

  • The deadline to submit your application through ERAS is December 31, 2008.

  • Our program will be interviewing from Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, through Friday, Jan. 23, 2009.

  • We will be closed for Thanksgiving (Nov. 27-28) and we will not be interviewing during the Christmas/New Year break Dec. 20 - Jan. 4.

A completed ERAS application for our residency consists of:

  • Completed Common ERAS Application Form                                                                           

  • Curriculum Vitae

  • Two (2) Letters of Recommendation   (see "Minimum Requirements for Consideration" listed below)

  • Personal Statement                       

  • Picture  (head photo shot taken within the past 6 months)                       

  • Medical School Transcript

  • Step I and Step 2 of the USMLE or COMLEX   (see "Minimum Requirements for Consideration" listed below)

  • Dean's Letter

  • ECFMG Certificate if applicable

Minimum Requirements for Consideration:

  • Letters of Recommendation must be written within the past year by U.S. Physicians you have worked with clinically.

  • USMLE or COMLEX Board Scores

    • There is no minimum score requirement but you must have passed each section by your third attempt

    • All applicants must pass Part I, and Part II Clinical Knowledge and Part II Clinical Skills in order to be ranked

    • Those with H-1 Visas must also pass Part III by February 1st, 2009 to be ranked. (see visa information below listed under "Additional Requirements")

  • There is no cut off date for medical school graduation but you must have been actively involved in clinical medicine (seeing patients) during the past 2 years.

  • Visa Requirements - We only accept J-1 and H-1 Visas (see below for more information)

  • Two months minimum of Clinical Rotations in the United States within the last 2 years precepted by a licensed allopathic or osteopathic licensed physician.  Clinical Rotations consist of:

    .

  • Direct contact with patients

  • Independent histories and physical examinations

  • Development of differential diagnoses

  • Identification of relevant clinical findings

  • Formulation of management plans

  • Observerships or Externships which do not include the above will not be accepted.

 

Additional Requirements for Appointment and Employment at Riverside Regional Medical Center:

  • Immunizations

Measles, Mumps, & Rubella:

   * Born before 1957: Proof of immunization to Rubella by vaccination or Titer

   * Born on or after 1957: Proof of immunity to Rubella Rubeola and Mumps

Hepatitis B Vaccine:

   * Series Completed/Date  or  Series in Progress/Dates

   * Documented declination of vaccine before you can be put on the Match List

Varicella (Chicken Pox):  

   Validate Varicella Titer or 2 Vaccines

Tuberculosis:

   Documented negative result on screening exam within current year.

  • Visas

    • Applicant must obtain own attorney.  All fees other than the H-1B Regular Processing Fees $190.00 and the H-1B Fraud Prevention and Detection Fee $500.00 are the responsibility of the applicant.

    • Special considerations for applicants with H-1 Visas

       

      • Step 3 must be passed in order to qualify for an H-1 Visa.  The average time to process an H-1 Visa is 2 to 3 months.

      • A Social Security Number cannot be obtained until the H-1 Visa is granted.  Processing requests for a Social Security Number takes about 3 to 4 weeks.

      • A Social Security Number is required to obtain a Virginia Intern Temporary Medical License.

      • A Virginia Intern Temporary Medical License, and a Social Security Number are necessary to begin employment at Riverside

      • Therefore, in order to be able to begin residency the third week of June (unless you are already certified in ACLS, NRP, PALS and ALSO), Step 3 must be passed by February 1, 2009 and we require this documentation in order to rank candidates.

 

Orientation Classes

  • Interns must attend Orientation Classes the third week of June 2009, unless they can present documentation of current certification for ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Pulmonary), and ALSO (Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics).

 

All potential employees are subject to a criminal background check and cannot be employed unless this is satisfactory.

 

All interns must be ready to start employment on June 27, 2009.  Applicants who match with our program but are not able to begin employment on June 27, 2009 are subject to immediate dismissal.
